(Belcamp, Maryland – October 4, 2012) Fifteen years after the publication of the acclaimed novel Mason’s Retreat, best-selling Eastern Shore author Christopher Tilghman returns to the Mason family and its decaying plantation on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in his new novel, The Right-Hand Shore. Harford County Public Library is pleased to be able to welcome him to the top of the bay this month to talk about this book and the particular beauty of the Delmarva region. Tilghman will be speaking at the Bel Air Library on Sunday, October 28 at 2:00 pm and will be available after the discussion to sign books.
In The Right-Hand Shore, the Masons and their former slaves attempt to create a just and viable community in the tumultuous years after the Civil War. Most of these hopes are dashed by the farm’s failure and an unsolved murder, but out of these tragedies comes a forbidden love affair that offers a chance for redemption.
A New York Times review praised The Right-Hand Shore, stating that it “represents an outing of some of America’s most troubled ghosts…Tilghman unfolds his harsh lesson with precision, delicacy and startling humor…The Right-Hand Shore is the dark, magisterial creation of a writer with an uncanny feel for the intersections of place and character in American history. His readers will want to hear more stories from the Eastern Shore estate.”
Christopher Tilghman’s life has revolved around his family’s farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Both The Right-Hand Shore and Mason’s Retreat tell the multigenerational story of a farm on the Eastern Shore modeled after his own. His other books include the novel Roads of the Heart and the short story collections In a Father’s Place and The Way People Run. Tilghman is a Professor of English and Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Virginia.
The Right-Hand Shore will be available to purchase in hardback for $20; Mason’s Retreat will be available to purchase in paperback for $9, or both books can be purchased for $25 (cash or check only) on the night of the author appearance. This program is funded by the Harford County Public Library Foundation. For more information or to register, please call the Bel Air Library at (410) 638-3151.
