(Belcamp, Maryland – September 24, 2013) The Daily Record has selected Harford County Public Library to receive a 2013 Innovator of the Year award. The Daily Record began the Innovator of the Year awards in 2002 as a way to recognize Marylanders and Maryland-based companies for their innovative spirit – for creating new products, new programs, new services or new processes that have helped their companies, industries or communities.

The Innovator of the Year awards will be presented to 25 innovators on Wednesday, October 2, which coincides with the 125th anniversary of the founding of the The Daily Record. “Innovators are on the cutting edge and make a huge difference in people’s lives, in the economy and in the success of our region,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of The Daily Record. “The winners of the 2013 Innovator of the Year awards represent the best of Maryland by developing new processes, products and practices in a wide variety of fields and in multiple arenas. It is an honor to recognize them in this, The Daily Record’s 125th anniversary year.”

Harford County Public Library was selected for the creation of Little Leapers, a collection of pre- and early-literacy kits that focus on fostering and developing pre- and early literacy skills through STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) topics. “We are honored to be recognized for the creation of Little Leapers,” stated Mary Hastler, Library Director. “The Little Leapers collection promotes the development of reading readiness, preparing our county’s children for school, and introducing STEM at an early age to nurture a life-long interest.”

Introduced in March 2013, the Little Leaper kit collection was designed by Harford County Public Library librarians. Targeted for children ages birth to 5 years these kits contain age-appropriate books, toys, games and instructions on how children and their families can use them. Four kits were specifically developed for infants that focus on colors, shapes, numbers, senses, and more.

The winners of the Innovation Awards will be honored October 2 at a cocktail reception at the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore. They will also be profiled in a special magazine to be included in the October 4 edition of The Daily Record. Sponsors of The Daily Record’s 2013 Innovator of the Year awards include Stevenson University, title sponsor; and Epsilon Registration and VPC, Inc., vision sponsors.
